Magazine Covers

Have you ever wondered if your favourite skateboard magazine has featured photos of women skateboarding on their covers, and how many? Here is an overview, which will be updated as the skateboard industry evolves.

Special shout-out to the magazines that have focused on female, non-binary, Trans and diverse skaters: Equal Time zine, Check it Out (Brazil / U.S.), Push (Canada), Hate on This, OH-SO, Quell, Dolores (Spain), SKATEISM, Bigfoot, Mess Mag, Mag De Zine (France), Into the Mirror (Brazil), and Betesga (Portugal).

See the page on Zines for DIY publications and full scans.

1960s

*Skateboarder was briefly called The Quarterly Skateboarder and had two runs from Winter 1964 – October 1965, and then Summer 1975 – September 1980, but none of their 1970s or 1980s issues included a female skater on the cover. Boo!

**Fun Fact: Laurie Turner is the first female skateboarder and photographer to appear in a skateboarding magazine and to have her photos published, as seen in the Winter 1964 Vol. 1 No. 1 issue of The Quarterly Skateboarder on page 37.

1970s

*The National Skateboard Review ran from January 1976 – April/May 1979, edited by Di Dootson Rose

  • Mazel Paris – Anyway magazine Spring / Summer 2025
  • Joey Yarbrough – Carlsbad magazine July / August 2025 (J. Grant Brittain)

There’s been a crap ton of skateboard magazines from around the world throughout the decades who missed their chance to celebrate women and non-binary skaters on their covers (not cool!) and many others that are still holding out… please give me a heads up if I’m missing a magazine or an alert when a publication finally steps up.

C’mon people, the longer you wait, the more awkward it gets.
