On top of writing / editing a book, Girl Gangs, Zines and Powerslides: a history of badass women skateboarders (Fall 2025) and on-going research for the archive / Instagram posts, I couldn’t resist supporting the launch of Skate Book Club with John Freeborn of @tailsofskateboarding. So far, we’ve released two newsletters with a feature book, an author interview, and two additional book reviews by none other than this resident skater librarian!

I was especially excited to highlight a YA novel this month by Li Charmaine Anne (she/they) whose book, Crash Landing received the Governor General’s award for Young People’s Literature! Congratulations again! Subscribe to the Skate Book Club newsletter, and consider reading a feature that Char wrote for the Tyee news site about their experience skating in Vancouver called “How Skateboarding Changed My Life” (Oct. 25, 2024).

Another fabulous hub for skateboarding journalism is Skate Bylines, hosted by writer / editor Farran Golding. Farran explained that, “SkateBylines was inspired by a simple thought: ‘What if there was a skateboarding version of Longform.org?’ and already, the site is proving to be valuable with features, interviews, and guidance on where to pitch a skateboarding story to. Check it out.
