Kelly Moran

Kelly Moran of Burbank, California was a skateboarder in the late 1970s, who had connections in the film industry considering that her sister played “Joanie Cunningham” in the sitcom, Happy Days.

At age 19, Kelly became known as the “Skateboard Girl” for the soda brand Royal Crown (RC) Cola, appearing in commercials and advertisements, like this one: “Me and My RC,” which aired in March 1978.

The website, Skate And Annoy reported that RC Cola collaborated with Super Surfer to mold their branding onto a plastic banana board. RC Cola even put out an album on vinyl with their jingles in 1975 called “Me and My RC” with Kelly on the cover. It looks like they were trying to appeal to a youthful market, following in the footsteps of Pepsi, which had become a big sponsor of skateboarders in the 1970s, all over the world (see MaryAnne Uyemura on the Pepsi Skateboard team in the Philippines!).

Another photo from the RC Cola photo shoot resulted in Kelly appearing on the cover of the December 1977 issue (vol. 1 no. 1) of Skateboard: Skating Dealer News, exclusively for companies looking to make some cash off of the booming industry! And, Kelly also hosted a skateboard Safety Clinic in Los Angeles, according to some promo posted by Jim O’Mahoney.

Apparently, Kelly utilized her skills performing the role of a skateboarding nurse in Young Doctors in Love (1982). And her first film was The Hazing (1977), directed by Douglas Curtis.

Would love to know how Kelly first got introduced to skateboarding.
